Hubert, the Traveling Hippopotamus

Front Cover
Little, Brown, 1961 - Hippopotamus - 28 pages
Hubert was born in the southeastern part of Africa. When he was little, he acted like all the other hippopotamuses, but when he got older, he decided he didn't want to stay with his family. In 1928, Hubert started traveling, walking through the green grass and swimming the rivers. When he came to an interesting village, he did no harm. He was gentle and friendly and caused no trouble, so the villagers let him stay until he decided to move on. All that traveling made Hubert very hungry and newspapers began reporting Hubert's travels (and lunches) His fame spread from South Africa to London where they even wrote poems about him After he got to Durban, the city council met to decide what to do about Hubert.
