I have not read the other sections of this book, so my critique below is not valid for any sections except the est Training discussion.
The essential misinterpretation of the est Training is based on
conflating levels of definition, and on Erhart's insistence on not explaining what he means on any level but his own. In fact, the "lie" he is talking about is real, humans do and must lie, but the definition needs explaining. For example: When photons of a certain wavelength interact with the pigments in our retina, a neurological reaction initiates impulses which eventually reach the optical lobe. Portions of that impulse also reach the frontal lobes and other brain areas which we take together, and have all agreed to do so, and call it (for example) green. Green is a human interpretation. In a sense, green does not exist in the universe except for the human designation of green. So, at one level, green is true, it is what we have decided to call that phenomenon, (Erhart: agreement is the substance of reality for humans) but in another sense, it is a lie. We have no way to know if "green" exists outside human experience. The universe just has photons. None of them are green before we make that interpretation. Therefor, we created green. Erhard says that makes us the God (or gods) of creation. I agree by taking that in a metaphorical, poetic sense. It is however, also available for people who prefer to take that in an "actual" sense. Having experienced the whole est Training, I conclude that Erhard does not want to arbitrate how attendees interpret/use the God thing. That is the attendee's responsibility, which is offensive for people who want "The Answer," but totally consistent with the Training's purpose. Erhart attacks the false notion that understanding is equivalent to agreeing or believing. So, concerning "Green," it is a lie if we try to impute it to the universe. The machine that runs the universe for humans is the "As If" machine. Newton said gravity acts as if it obeyed his equations. Then Einstein came up with a better "as if." We can't know gravity the way the universe does, only as humans can. So our math about gravity is, in that way, a lie, and always has to be. We cannot know a "thing in itself," but we can invent and agree upon "lies" that describe our interpretations of it. Concerning Christianity, the training made me a better Christian. Consider hopelessness. It is liberating. Any Bible scholar knows Ephesians 2: 8,9 as seminal to Christianity. Perfection can not be achieved by following the rules, "the Law," by human effort. Give up, it is hopeless. Thus "Salvation," relief from the curse of that failure, can only come by "Grace," which I experience as unmerited favor, relief, freedom to live. Living in the struggle only accentuates the failure (The Law creates sin). One of the most powerful and practical things I gained from the training almost 45 years ago, and still serves me well, is that if "experience is the best teacher," we are all lousy students. To fully experience a failure allows real learning. The technology of fully experiencing is a life-skill art requiring hard but gratifying work. Experiencing is not surviving and living through something. It is a full, all-sensory, cognitive and emotional investigation and acceptance of a thing. Judging some experiences as bad, horrible, or worse, can block learning from experience. It shows up as justifications, excuses, blaming, etc. At some point, at some time, those have a purpose, but first try handling matters as if they are merely "what is," and as such, they are perfect for complete observations on what happened. The best, really the only, right place to start from is where you are. That makes it the perfect place to be. Fully experiencing it launches you forward. The est Training can be denigrated very handily by interspersing superficial, trivialized meanings with deeper levels of
