One of the largest and most complex human services systems in Western nations has evolved to address the needs of people with developmental disabilities. For practitioners in developmental disabilities and for parents of those with developmental disabilities, I highly recommend that you read this book. Unfortunately, there are many fads - past and present - that too many parents, teachers, administrators, and professionals latch onto for hope. These three eminent professionals who are also research scientists who debunk fraudulent theories and practices being used by too many well-meaning professionals and families have done a great service. Why? Because lost hope, spent savings, and continued pain and suffering are the cost of fads and frauds in developmental disabilities. These three experts took a great risk by focusing on this topic because some will attack them for speaking the truth. The are not "politically correct" authors - they are honest, scientific-based reseaerchers who take apart popular practices with some: "the myth of nonaversive treatment of severe behavior behavior", "person centered planning", "the self-esteem fallacy", "facilitated communication, and "gentle teaching."
