About the author (1999)

Pauline Harris is Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Wollongong, Australia. She began her teaching career several years ago as an early years teacher in Sydney schools. Over the years, she found herself teaching in a diverse range of social, cultural and linguistic settings. Pauline undertook her postgraduate studies overseas at The University of California, Berkeley, and on completing her Doctoral thesis on reading in the early school years, she took up her present position at the University of Wollongong. There, she teaches in language and literacy, as well as play, curriculum and classroom research methodologies. Her research interests continue to rest with young children¿s reading, which in recent years has been funded by the Australian Research Council. In 2002 she won the Alan C. Purves Award for her research article that appeared in Research in the Teaching of English.
