This volume summarizes what we know of early Advaita Vedanta upto the Samkara's pupils, Suresvara, Padmapada, Totaka and Hanstamalaka. An analytical introduction by the editor introduces the reader to the concepts utilized by Gaudapada, Samkaracarya and mandana Misra in expounding and defending the Advaita view. This is followed by summaries of all the authentic Advaita works of these authors, together with those of Suresvara and Padmapada as well as a number of other works which have been attributed to samkara, Totaka and Hastamalaka. This volume is divided into two parts and is enriched with an elaborate introduction discussing briefly the history of the school, its theories of value, language and relations and its metaphysics and epistemology.

The effort of Prof.KarlH.Potter to present the Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies in number of volumes is highly commendable.The VolIII on Adwaita Vedanta upto Shankara and his pupils is very lucid and contains no misconceptions.However,there is one objectionable statement on Shankara to be "dishonest"is highly malicious and shows the nonunderstanding of his bhashyas.This might have come from his rivals like Ramanuja the founder of "Vishistadwaita"and Madwa the founder of the "Dwaita",both of them have not understodd clearly the Shankara bhashyas,and have interpreted the sruthi texts erroneously and contains many mythological allusions which have no bearing on the subject on hand.Earlier,the translation of the "Brahmasutrabhashya"by Thibaut contained many erroneous interpretations and subjective evaluation by Thibaut.This should not happen in these volumes.It is my earnest hope that the above objectionable statement be removed henceforth from Vol III on Shankara.Otherwise the volIII is extremely readable.
