An extensive guide for librarians who are faced with ordering or cataloguing books in a language they know either very poorly or not at all. For 38 languages, provides information on general characteristics, bibliolinguistics, the alphabet, phonetics, spelling, articles, the various parts of speech, word formation, and any special feature. They also include glossaries of terms used in libraries and publication. The languages are ordered by family: Germanic; Latin and Romance; Celtic, Greek, and Albanian; Slavonic; Baltic; and Finno- Ugrian. Many of the sections begin by considering general characteristics of the language family. A final miscellaneous section includes treatments of Maltese, Turkish, and Basque and a note on Esperanto. No date is noted for the first edition, but the second responds to changes particularly in eastern European languages. No index or bibliography.
