This book was written by my great grandfather, Joseph Gould who served as a Quartermaster Sgt. of the 48th Regiment. He was designated as the historian to write about the campaigns and battles of the Regiment during the four years of the war to preserve the Union ( 1861 - 1865 ). Joseph Gould accessed many sources such as notes, diaries, Official Records of the War and the Miners' Journal. The accounts and details are thorough and portray a group of brave men from Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania who were dedicated to patriotism and forever abolished human slavery from our borders. The story of the Regiment and the Petersburg, Va mine is an incredible feat and significant part of the history of the Civil War.
