About the author (1997)

Kirk Gibson is one of the best known figures in modern baseball. Born in 1957 in Pontiac, Mich., he attended Michigan State University where he was All-American in both football and baseball. He was drafted by the National Football League in 1979, but chose to play professional baseball instead. He began his career with the Detroit Tigers and joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988. Gibson hit a dramatic home run in that year's World Series to help the Dodgers win the game and, eventually, the series. He was later voted the National League's Most Valuable Player. The ups and downs of Gibson's life, from his memorable homer to the bad knee injuries that threatened to end his career, are chronicled in his book Bottom of the Ninth, which is full of photos and insight into this legendary figure.
