Storm in the Mountains: Thomas' Confederate Legion of Cherokee Indians and Mountaineers"Raised by William H. Thomas, an enterprising frontiersman from the back woods of the Confederacy, Thomas' Legion was composed of native Cherokee Indians and white mountaineers from Tennessee and North Carolina. Thomas recruited a full infantry regiment; two battalions, one of which had three companies of cavalry and another which eventually contained four companies of Cherokees; and one battery of light artillery. Hence the name -- Thomas' Legion -- infantry, artillery, and cavalry, all serving under one commander"--Jacket. |
