This textbook deals with the analysis and design of imagingsystems and image processing systems. It contains in asingle volume the background material necessary forunderstanding both the physics of such systems and the wayin which the designs accomodate the visual perception of theobserver. Of central importance is the mathematics ofconverting optical images to electrical signals and viceversa, whereby it is stressed that the quality of suchconversions must be judged subjectively.The material is easily accessible to senior undergraduatesand first year students. A knowledge of elementary physics,calculus, and linear systems theory is assumed, but anextensive mathematical and statistical background is notrequired.This third edition has been updated and includes chapters oncolor and the design of improved television systems, and anappendix describing the current status of high-defintiontelevision throughout the world.
