Some time ago when the editors became involved in writing and producing an interactive videodisc course on Kraft Pulping for TAPPI, we realized there were few single sources a student could turn to for definitive pulping information. While we found excellent sources for one topic or another, usually in the midst of a larger body of information, we did not find one source containing the information required to support the instructional content presented in the videodisc courses. The first step in the development of the videodisc courses was to collect and assemble the content upon which the instructional strategies would be based. The project team set about the task of perusing the literature and isolating those sources that best presented the information either through word, chart, or graphic. The next step was to collate this information into a workable document from which the videodisc scripts would be written. Upon completion, we realized that this compilation of notes might serve a purpose, in and of themselves, to students and others interested in the subject of Kraft Pulping. We felt the students taking the three courses in TAPPI's Kraft Pulping: A Key to Quality Production would certainly benefit, because it was not possible or desirable to present all needed information via video, especially charts and lengthy explanations best suited to the printed page. This compilation of notes is not presented as an original work; although, many passages and charts were created in an effort to bring order and meaning to disparate explanations. In some places, the narrative resembles exactly what it is, a collection of notes, rather than a full discourse. Our primary concern was bringing the information together in one place. The content was drawn primarily from twenty TAPPI sources. The editors wish to document and acknowledge these sources, for without them, this compilation of notes would not have been possible. See the list of contributors for the sources used. As Project Director, I would like to specifically acknowledge the contribution of the team members. Agneta Mimms was primarily responsible for collecting and assembling the written material from various sources. Hermany hours of meticulous work are applauded and acknowledged. We especially appreciate Dr. Michael J. Kocurek, Herty Foundation, for suggesting the content notes be organized for publication and for his editing the final manuscript for technical accuracy. In addition to Dr. Kocurek, we wish to thank Dr. Peter E. Parker, Dr. Terry N. Adams, and William S.Fuller for their valuable information and assistance throughout the project. Dr. Elizabeth E. Wright served as instructional designer and worked with me to edit and finalize the manuscript for publication.
