I think this is a great story, but several readers aren't ever going to know it due to the dreadfully slow beginning. If you can make it past the slow start, though, there are multiple levels to the plot--a murder mystery, a run at a basketball championship, a school project mirroring real life, a friendship tested. Even with all these elements working together, the story isn't convoluted. The fast pace of the rest of the novel does make up, a bit, for the slow beginning. Overall a great read, though--another great one by this author!--and one that boys and girls alike would enjoy.
