(Extract from O.Vation magazine #OBSERVER1896 /// 120th Anniversary »OBSERVER«) "Two years after the beginning of the Second World War, the »OBSERVER« changed hands again: Irene Hertha Schmidt, the daughter of the owner of the media advisor, who was still based in Berlin, took over. Schmidt is the author of one of the few scholarly papers on media observation. In 1939, she presented her dissertation „The economic significance and organization of the newspaper clipping offices“ at the Faculty of Law of the University of Freiburg (Switzerland). Thanks to her commitment the »OBSERVER« survived the turmoil of the Second World War and the postwar period. As a non-Austrian, Schmidt (later Köppen) had to fear the preservation of the enterprise since 1945 as „German property“ under the administration of the occupying powers. Only after the signing of the Austrian independence treaty was the »OBSERVER« – like the state of Austria – free. The founding of the Fédération Internationale of the Bureau d'Extraités de Presse (FIBEP), the World Federation of Media Monitors, in 1953 was the impetus for the next internationalization step of the »OBSERVER« as local customers were able to monitor international media and international customers retained their own overview of the contents of domestic media."
