Johnson Co, KYAny history of Johnson County must begin (and probably end) with the Big Sandy River. It was the Big Sandy River winding itw way south-to-north from the Breaks of the Mountains to the Ohio River, which encourages the discovery and early exploration of the region. Although there is speculation that Spanish and French nationals may have made brief forays into what is now Eastern Kentucky, Dr. Thomas Walker, leading a band of explorers for the Loyal Land Company of Virginia is generally identified as being the first white man to stand on the western bank of the Big Sandy River at the mouth of Paint Creek. |
