1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus

Editorial Review - Kirkus - Jane Doe

Unless you're an anthropologist, it's likely that everything you know about American prehistory is wrong. Science journalist Mann's survey of the current knowledge is a bracing corrective. Historians once thought that prehistoric Indian peoples somehow lived outside of history, adrift and directionless, "passive recipients of whatever windfalls or disasters happenstance put in their way"; that ... Review: 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus

Editorial Review - Bookreporter.com - Robert Finn

A more appropriate subtitle for this iconoclastic book might be: "Everything you thought you knew about PreColumbian America is (probably) wrong." Charles Mann is not himself an archeologist, anthropologist or geographer; he is a science writer with impressive credentials. He obviously is also an industrious fellow who has traveled widely, interviewed everyone he could find who seemed to matter ... Read full review

Fascinating topics. Some great points about a more accurate portrayal of the Americas prior to the Europeans. However could not escape a sense of it being too dry. Charles Mann is no Jared Diamond. Read full review
