The phenomenon of shrinking cities leads to a dramatic confrontation with decreasing populations, vacant apartments and the closure of businesses. Questions are inevitably raised: Should vacant residential properties be redeveloped or demolished, and how do we handle industrial wastelands? This situation of deep-seated structural change calls for an approach to urban redevelopment which provides site-specific, integrative and forward-looking solutions, consciously shaping decisive alterations. The essays and illustrations of this publication present numerous interesting examples of such an approach; either in the planning stage, or already realised. Planners, representatives of research and teaching, of the economy, politics and administration expound on significant aspects in selected contributions from the series of events "Tatort Stadt" ("Workplace City").
