A Little History of the Horn-bookThe horn-book was the earliest lesson-book first book made for children use themselves, to handle. That the horn-book was not a 'book' at all--in the common understanding of the term--does not detract from the fact that it was designed to be studied in the manner of a book. It was invented to protect the lesson-sheet, which was vellum or paper--both of which were very expensive, and needed to withstand wear-and-tear, as it was to serve as a first text for many children. This well illustrated volume is a brief and thorough introduction to the horn-book and its history. |
