Pettingill was a pastor for twenty-five years in Wilmington, Delaware, served as the dean of the Philadelphia School of the Bible, and was a member of the editorial staff for the Scofield Reference Bible.nbsp; His numerous books are well-regarded for the understandable way in which they handle difficult questions.

A powerful preacher, R.A. Torrey was the first superintendent of the Moody Bible Institute, pastor of the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles, and dean of the Bible Institute in Los Angeles (now Biola University).
