This is an interesting book that is clearly based on extensive research and combines a range of theories from different disciplines. It provides a comprehensive and nuanced introduction to what intuition is and how it can be used in business environments. This is not one of those ‘motivational’ books the management literature is full off – it is not a simple how-to guide full of fancy buzz-words, that all sound good but don’t actually have much content to them. This book is nuanced and balanced, it does not present intuition as something a lucky few ‘just have’: it emphasises the role of experience and hard work, and shows how to become more aware of when intuition can help in decision making. Those looking for the secret formula to intuitive success will thus be disappointed, but those looking for a clearly argued and scientifically underpinned book on the phenomenon will find ‘The Intuitive Mind’ very useful indeed.

About the author (2010)

Dr Eugene Sadler-Smith, Professor of Management Development and Organization Behaviour, School of Management, University of Surrey, UK. Before becoming an academic he worked in human resource development in the gas industry. His research interests are currently centred upon the role of intuitive judgement in decision making and management. His research has been published widely in journals such as the Academy of Management Executive, Academy of Management Learning and Education, British Journal of Psychology, Journal of Occupational & Organizational Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behaviour, Management Learning, Long Range Planning, and Organization Studies. Eugene Sadler-Smith is joint Editor-in-Chief of Management Learning. He has researched and published widely in the field of learning and development and is author of several books including Learning and Development for Managers: Perspectives from Research and Practice (Blackwell/Wiley, 2006) and Inside Intuition (Routledge, 2008). His intuition research has featured in The Times and on BBC Radio 4.
