Fantagraphics is proud to publish this original debut graphic novel from a director of big- and little-screen animated gems. Cathy Malkasian has made the jump from animation to the printed page with a graceful, delicate leap. She deftly uses her pencil to create thick, expressive characters moving through the twilight of a shadowy Orwellian world. Humorous and bewitching at the same time,Percy Gloomis a unique gem of a story. Occupying an unreal world of secret societies, benevolent families, and bureaucratic security, lazy-eyed Percy Gloom fights to overcome the loss of his wife, Lila, to a truth-pointing, lotharian cult-leader. Pursued by the muffin-throwing daughter of the city's important family and purposeless in life, Percy finds some security and meaning through a position testing various everyday items (such as hairbrushes and encyclopedias) for their danger potential. Approached by his doctor to help protect some special people and given advice by some talking goats, Percy comes to terms with his place in the gloomy world and finds himself reaching enlightenment (literally).

Review: Percy Gloom

User Review  - Goodreads

Read with Beautiful Darkness by Fabien Vehlmann. Strange unexpected storytelling, that transcends its at-first difficult-to-swallow-illustration style. I loved the details in the illustrations - the giant snails, the shapes of the trees. Transgressive and dark, despite its seeming naivete. Read full review
