Pat Conroy's descriptions of the South and Charleston, SC life are absolutely the best. No one can touch him. He makes you regret where you were born if you are from somewhere other than Charleston. I had never read anything like this book before, getting a look inside a military school. Read full review

i hate reading long books, but this was by far one of the best books i have ever read. The plot twist at the end really hit me. love this book!

I've read this book before (possibly twice), and I'd always thought of it as pretty amazing. A kind of dramatic, "powerful" (like the tricks a good speech-writer uses to rouse the audience) and... there's a symmetry to these long run on sentences he uses to describe his character as a product of/reaction against his parents and the Deep South society he grew up in, how feels it was forged somehow in his four years in The Citadel military academy. I remember it as being funny. Anyway, this time around I found it embarrassingly sentimental and the narrator comes of (unintentionally) as a self-deceptive pussy of sorts - and not that funny after all. Still worth a (once-off) read. I hope 'The Prince of Tides' re-reads better since I remember it as an all-time best.
