The book is looking towards the identification of the design problem of giving visual form to the city or designing a new one. Perception and association triggers through the visual form
give the flexibility to the user to identify and organize different element of his surrounding environment to develop mental image of the city.

Urban planning classic. Overview of the elements of a city: path, edge, district, nodes and landmarks, based on surveys of 100 or so inhabitants of Boston, LA and Jersey City. When this book came out there was a real lack of thinking about city planning as a whole and it was pretty groundbreaking. Read full review
