In this system the whole numbers in the exponen ts or logarithms, are evidently indicative of the number of digits in the number itself, and are always one less than this number of digits thence this whole number is called the Characteristic of the 10 arithm. Any number intermediate between any two powers of ten, wi l therefore contain, besides the char acteristic proper to the number of its digits, an approximating decimu fraction (called mantissa. The characteristic being thus determined by the number of digits o the number, it is in this system, only neces sary to know this decimal fraction, in order to operate with these loga rithms u on any quantity whatever.
