Any number intermediate between any two powers of ten, wi l therefore contain, besides the char acteristic proper to the number of its digits, an approximating decimu fraction (called mantissa. The characteristic being thus determined by the number of digits o the number, it is in this system, only neces sary to know this decimal fraction, in order to operate with these loga rithms u on any quantity whatever.
