Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes how the Media Distort the News
In his nearly thirty years at CBS News, Emmy Award winner Bernard Goldberg earned a reputation as one of the preeminent reporters in the television news business. When he looked at his own industry, however, he saw that the media far too often ignored their primary mission: to provide objective, disinterested reporting. Again and again he saw that the news slanted to the left. For years, Goldberg appealed to reporters, producers, and network executives for more balanced reporting, but no one listened. The liberal bias continued.
Now, breaking ranks and naming names, he reveals a corporate news culture in which the closed-mindedness is breathtaking and in which entertainment wins over hard news every time.

Bernie wrote an excellent book. Though he admits to being a liberal he was stunned at the outrage he created when he exposed the fact that the media was manipulating the message to promote a liberal perspective. He mentions that he was ostracized after write an op ed piece about media bias. That lead him to write this book.
The factual way he discusses the tricks used to not outright lie but still send a message contrary to the actual news of the day. An example that stuck with was how during the Reagan administration whenever a set of economic statistics came out that demonstrated the economy was at an all time high, the numbers would be given a brief segment to simply announce them. However, later there would be dramatic video segment showing some poor homeless family living in a car or something similar. Naturally giving 10 seconds to read some numbers is less impacting than seeing a pitiful family's suffering for 90 to 120 seconds. What was even more insidious was that his research found that as soon as Clinton took office the homeless stories disappeared! He proposed the question "Did America's homeless problem get instantly resolved? Or is the media no longer interested in making the policies of the White House look bad?"

I can refute almost the entire chapter on homelessness. If I could give this book no stars I would. He doesn't source or reference anything - no endnotes, no way to verify his statements. I got halfway through and stopped. Read full review
