As an academic in a big university in Manila the University of Santo Tomas, I am pleased to say that we have been using the book authored by Gerald Karp for almost 10 years now. Each school year, we have 5 to 6 classes composed of 40 students each which uses this book as prescribed textbook in their fourth year subject: Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB). These are graduating students majoring in biology many of which will move on to pursue medicine and a few enter graduate school. The book provides a comprehensive and thorough treatment of the basic and advanced concepts of cell and molecular biology for undergraduate students. Emphasis is on the structure-function relationships of biomolecules and organelles and also on an investigatory approach in the experimental methods employed in cell biology. Through the years, I witnessed how this book evolved scholastically by incorporating the latest findings in cell and molecular biology. Updated listings of Nobel Prize winners inside the book provides an illustrious and inspiring historical account of the development of CMB as a science of which I and my students feel so much a part of. For 2015, my co-teachers and I look forward with much excitement to a novel, more learning enjoyable, visually stimulating and user-friendly edition of the book: Cell and Molecular Biology by Gerald Karp.
