About the author (1987)

Konrad was born in Hungary. He was a social worker, editor, and sociologist before turning to fiction. In 1990 he was elected president of International PEN.

Howe has taught at Brandeis and Stanford Universities and is now Professor of English at Hunter College of the City University of New York.
