My wife and I are reading it together, and discussing as we go. We find his work patchy - some expositions are brilliant, others obtuse and verbose. He tends to spiritualise the practical wisdom of Proverbs, thus narrowing its application. Sometimes we give up and go back to the Scripture verse he is 'expounding', and we find it easier to understand than his 'explanation' thereof. He ought to be willing to take the plain text as it is and not always feel obliged try to find some hidden spiritual meaning. He writes out of the mono-cultural context in which he lived and worked. Yet other times we are moved to spontaneous prayer by his exposition. Although I can recognise most of his intra-biblical illustrations, he assumes a breadth of biblical literacy that is not common today, and it would help if he had named some of the Biblical characters he alludes to, so that it is not necessary to look up every marginal Scripture reference.
This book is a gem! The practical truths of scripture are so clearly expounded. Charles Bridges, by the grace of God, sees the LORD Jesus Christ in all his wisdom and beauty. Bridges saw what few people see when they read the Book of Proverbs. Jesus is the Wisdom spoken of.. Wisdom is the person of Christ. Read this book prayerfully, meditating on the Word of God. May you find the spiritual food that I found in this book. Eat from it daily!
