The Author: William Ray Arney is a member of the Faculty of Sociology at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. His previous books include <I>Educating for Freedom: The Paradox of Pedagogy (with Donald L. Finke); <I>Power and the Profession of Obstetrics; Medicine and the Management of Living: Taming the Last Great Beast (with Bernard J. Bergen); and <I>Experts in the Age of Systems.
