finished The Mummy! - Mrs Jane Loudon (1828). The year is 2126; the mummy Cheops, rescuscitated by a misguided experiment in galvanism, steals through an England of hot air balloon transit, overeducated menials, clockwork lawyers, and steam-powered lawnmowers, insinuating himself with all parties (for good or ill?) as the throne of England repeatedly changes hands.
Had I not read this myself (all three volumes) I would sincerely doubt that this was a real book. Mrs Loudon's other literary output consists entirely of books on gardening, entertaining, and raising chickens. I don't know that I'd say it was good, exactly, but the sheer outlandishness of the tale has a certain charm.
