Research on the Preparation of Pure Metals
Experimental studies on the preparation and characterization of various electronically interesting inorganic and organic elements and compounds are described. In the inorganic phases of these investigations emphasis was placed on the synthesis and the characterization of certain selected elements and binary compounds in high purity by specific reactions involving the preparation and subsequent decomposition of metal hydrides, azides and other unstable intermediates. Data are presented on the synthesis and characterization of high purity yttrium, nickel, cobalt, manganese as well as gallium nitride, gallium and aluminum phosphide. Exploratory studies were also conducted on the preparation of single crystal films of selected group II-VI compounds, again via the decomposition of various unstable intermediates. Experiments with candidate organic semiconductor materials were directed towards developing a better understanding of the relationships between chemical structure and electronic conductivity with emphasis on polymeric materials because of their superior thermal and chemical stability. The preparation and electronic properties of the polyhalopyridines and selected charge transfer complexes thereof are described in some detail. Data are also presented on polypridyl acetylenes, phenyl polymers, polyesters, polycyanogen and certain specially synthesized pyridine polymers as well as a number of modified vinyl polymers.
