This book and nearly all references to measurement of the effectiveness of ClO2 in killing oral bacteria suffer from two critical shortcomings. 1. There persists in the literature confusion between NaClO2 (sodium chlorate) also misnamed "stabilized chlorine dioxide" and ClO2 (a molecular gas( that does not disassiciate in solution), and 2) ClO2 penetrates virtually all plastic containers. The smaller the volume to container size the more rapid the loss of ClO2. Only opaque glass and poly therephthalate containers prevent loss of ClO2 through the container wall. In an unopened 500 ml bottle of a mixture of ClO2 and NaClO2 where ClO2 starts at 50 ppm, the concentration of ClO2 drops to 10 ppm or less at pH of 6.2.
