The characters were authentic, and not too complex. The narration was told in third person, but clearly reflected the values of the main character (as if the narrative was spoken through him). The book expanded my knowledge (or at least my interest) in various directions. Most of this expansion came from what was written about the main character's best friend, who I like. This book is really more psychologically and socially minded than a cerebral sci-fi novel. Overall, a pleasant read.
