Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults: Mother-daughter Item Consistency on the Wender Utah Rating Scale
Historically ADHD was considered a circumscribed pediatric disorder that "disappeared" during adolescence. Though the DSM-IV now recognized that children with ADHD will likely continue to manifest symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder into adulthood, there is really no generally accepted psychometric test available to diagnose adult ADHD. Ward, Wender, and Reimherr (1993) recognizing the need to diagnose ADHD in adults, developed the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS) to allow adults to retrospectively describe their own childhood behavior. Archival data from Gitelman (1996) were obtained for a more refined item-metric analysis for the present study. It was hypothesized that there would be significant agreement between self and maternal rated retrospective symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder on most Wender Utah Rating Scale-Short Form items. The principal results indicate that retrospective recall of the presence or absence of ADD/ADHD symptoms is somewhat consistent between young adults and their maternal caretakers.
