About the author (1996)

Margaret Orbell is an educator, writer, and scholar of the Maori culture of New Zealand. In the mid-1960s, Orbell was the editor of Te Ao Hou, the magazine of the Department of Maori Affairs. She also taught at Canterbury University as an associate professor of Maori. Orbell published The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Maori Myth and Legend, a compendium of 400 stories and 240 illustrations that chronicle the Maori view of life since the arrival of the settlers.
