Drugs and Nutrition in the Geriatric PatientDaphne A. Roe Abstract: Eight literature reviews concerning aspects of drug-nutrient interactions and elderly nutrition are presented for physicians and other health professionals involved with geriatric care. The reviews focus on the diets of the elderly, their intakes of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and the interactive effects of aging, diet, and nutrition as factors which explain untoward effects of drugs in the elderly. Topics include: drug uses and food choices; food effects on drug absorption; nutritional status and drug disposition; drug-induced hypo- and hypercholesterolemia; drug-induced mineral depletion; adverse effects of over-the-counter drugs; and vitamin use and abuse.
