The Wells family dates back to the 1600's and originally settled in the Baltimore, Maryland area. They became very prosperous with tobacco plantations in the seventeen hundreds. Next they moved into the frontier of western Virginia (what is now the Northwestern part of West Virginia) where they needed to build forts to help fight Indian uprisings in the late seventeen and early eighteen hundreds. As the country became more settled they moved into Ohio and in the mid-eighteen hundreds they migrated to the Missouri/Iowa border. My Grandfather Wells had sixteen brothers and sisters and was a life long farmer. The Ramseys came from Kentucky in the early eighteen hundreds and moved between Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa. They tended to be less prosperous and more transient. I struggled to find verifiable information about them. They were farmers also. I believe you will find the saga of the Wells and Ramsey Families to be enlightening. My mother's chapter relating her life will illustrate how families coped with challenges in rural America from the depression of the thirties to modern times. Enjoy.
