About the author (2001)

William Neill made his living in the field of medicine, but an enduring love for the natural world--especially butterflies--has always been central to his life. From his home base in Portland, Oregon, he chases butterflies throughout the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountains and as far afield as Canada's Labrador Coast and Yukon Territory.

Doug Hepburn learned photography in the Navy. Working in the field of high-tech engineering and human genetics, he met William Neill at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center. They discovered a mutual love of butterflies and began collaborating. A lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, Doug is a devotee of its natural history.
