"Glimpses of the Supernatural: Being Facts, Records, and Traditions Relating to Dreams, Omens, Miraculous Occurrences, Apparitions, Wraiths, Warnings, Second Sight, Necromancy, &c.," by the Rev. Frederick George Lee, D.C.L., Vicar of All Saints, Lambeth, Two volumes in one. This book might be supposed to be a mere collection of ghost and other weird stories, with a reference to modern spiritist or spiritual occurrences, and indeed these latter are largely treated, but Dr. F. G. Lee, whose proclivities are pretty well known, introduces in the first part, two important chapters on 'The Miraculous in Church History, ' and on the spiritual powers and properties of the Church, sacraments, sacramentals, and exorcism, in which he tells some marvellous histories, and professes his belief in Sister Marie Josephine of the Incarnation, certain modern Roman Catholic miracles, the 'dead hand of the Jesuit Edward Arrowsmith, executed in 1628, and which restored a sick man, Lamb, in 1814, the year before the battle of Waterloo. 'Thus we see, ' says Dr. Lee, "the prophecy of a Christian priest, who was unjustly and illegally condemned and cruelly murdered, exactly and most strikingly fulfilled, and a wonderful sign bestowed from God to man of eternal truth in the supernatural cure wrought some two centuries and more afterwards upon this Lancashire farm-labourer.' This book is full of wonderful stories; Dr. Lee seems to think that miracles are more frequent in Roman Catholic countries, because they are more fully Christian than ours. The chapters on Spiritualism are interesting: the author seems to regard it as necromancy, and the works as the works of the devil. The two vols. in one book is produced in a fitting style. It will be well if the work is kept away from the weak-minded and from children.
