I loved this book right up until the end, and then, well, it felt a lot like Mr. Weber got strong armed into adding a preternatural element to his story, so he did it with a big fat birdie to the powers that be who strong armed him.
His treatment of survivalist culture was spot on, his pacing, the dramatic build up, his homages to scifi tropes were deeply satisfying. I kept eagerly waiting to see one of my favorite authors bridge the scifi and preternatural / urban fantasy genres, because if anyone could do it well, I thought, it would be David Weber.
Except he didn't even try. His preternatural element came in as a deus ex machina story killer. I cried.

Really? Cmon!
Just bad...

Love David weber, but...
Ending ruined the whole book.

Usually I devour anything from Weber and did so to the end....but the ending of the book ruined the whole experience. This was by far the most disappointing ending of a book only to be equaled by the way Asimov ended the Foundation saga.

So I quite liked all the Honor Harrington books... but this book is not like that.
It's OK up to a point, once you get past the extensive cataloging of weaponry. A page turner. But then comes the
ending.
Tactically, an large unopposed force stationed in orbit has the ultimate recourse on a planet-bound population. Ground warfare is interesting, but really a sideshow.
Unfortunately, Weber paints himself into exactly this corner, and then resorts to a massive Deus ex Machina involving a certain charismatic gentleman from Transylvania (and we're not talking Dr Frank-N-Furter, though goodness knows that would have been better).
Very disappointing.

As usual, David Weber delivers an excellent read. Have to say I did not see the end coming! What a twist! Can't wait for the sequel, if there is one. Characters were believable, and had depth. Recommended!

I just bought this ebook. It was a normal weber effort heavy on battle desciptions as expected. Then came the twist ending. I guess Weber just could not figure out a way to get his heroes out of this one and just pulled a miracle ending out of his rear. I was seriously disappointed. I will not buy any of the rest of this series.

Not his best work, by far. I sometimes find David Weber books formulaic, but I can look past it because they are so entertaining! This book, however, is several chapters of disjointed blather, followed by a disappointing ending. This is the first book by this author I have regretted purchasing.

Not a bad read, however the ending leaves the sci-fi arena a bit. I'd recommend it.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. The fight scenes are gorgeous, and the technology are high end. Kinetic strikes, armored tank battles, IED's in Russia, and ambushes keeps the pace hard and fast. However, it just seems to me that it's a far fetched idea that aliens who have traveled between the stars would find so much trouble with mere Earthlings. A good read, when all is said and done, and I would not mind reading it again.
