In June, 1992, 16 year-old Boy Scout Jason Francois of Douglas, Arizona was awakened by screams during a camping outing. He found his friend, Tait Holbrook of Tucson, Arizona, being mauled and dragged off by a 400-pound black bear. After telling Tait to play dead, Francois chased the bear and threw rocks at it until it ran off, then administered first aid to his friend.

About the author (1995)

Morris is the author of 15 books, including the Teens 911 book series and the Real Kids Real Adventures book series (adapted as an Emmy-nominated TV series airing in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and around the world). She has also written more than 140 feature magazine articles and co-produced two reality-based TV movies. Deborah lives in Garland, Texas with her husband,three dogs, three birds, one cat, a pink-toed tarantula, and her own "realkids"!
