The one thing that found really interesting in this book was the fact that my ancestors had nothing to do with the removal of the aboriginal's lands or the residential school system. Yet, I find there is a rampant racism towards whites the Native culture. I have done my share of working on the reserves and I have had to deal with the racism as if it had something to do with me personally. A couple of contradictions that I found in the book was first the complaints about poverty on the reserves and then the problems caused by an influx of money from the Goverment. One of the examples given was Hobema and the oil royalties pay outs (that caused many social problems on the rez) and the band complained that the money was distributed without anyone showing them how to save or manage their money. I am sure on a reserve that large somebody from Hobema could have shown the people how to manage their money. I just noticed that there was no real solutions to many of the problems that reserves face, except for the exclusion of whites helping out. Not all white people have bad intentions and if the Aboriginals don't like racism and it's effects than why is okay to hate whites? I also notice that there was a real lack of any accountibility. Constant victimization does not help to move on with viable solutions it just seemed at every issue or situation was traced back to being someone else's fault. In order to really change a community everyone needs to be accountable for their actions. How about taking a look at some of the crooked Chiefs that use the funding for their personal benefits or all the other social ills that are not caused directly or indirectly by whites.
