A brilliant, well written piece on the hacker culture and its early defining moments. Levy brings to life what a no other book probably will do, and this part of the start of the computer revolution may have been lost in the slums of computing history. It may not seem like much today, the computers were underpowered and in this day and age of facebook games and mobile phones in pretty much in everyones hands - writing a game of spacewar or pong is laughable - most any competent programmer could churn the code out in a few hours with a fancy IDE and debugger. But Levy portrays the infancy of computing culture and hackerism in a very romaticised style, the constraints and the new-ness of the challenges that these young hackers faced, and the brilliancy with which they overcame the problems are highlighted and makes this book highly readable. This book is recommended for anyone who yearns for their youth and youthful mischief in dimly lit corridors of some academic institution, and for anyone who wants to learn about what drove the innovations that made computers what they are today.

A fantastic story, inspiring to anyone who has ever had a fascination with computers. I have a great, new, respect for the people that are documented in this book. The things that they did were incredible for the time and they advanced society's technology against great odds.

A very good book and very inspiring but can't help think Levy has a huge man crush on some of the old hackers. Some of the activities like breaking into the work shop for tools seem to be praised. They may have not meant to do wrong but not something to lookup to them for. Otherwise well written and entertaining.

This book catalyzed my interest in computers, and in writing software.
