I know this book very well. It is a wonderful short story about a young African american girl growing up in the racist south, and how her and her family overcame the obstacles of their time. It is a very up close and personal window into this world from her perspective. What is extraordinary is something that today's society all to often overlook - Every White person of the time did not agree with the Jim crow laws that were in place. It was to the good nature of some White Americans, of that time, who helped many African Americans on their path from the ugly Jim Crow laws of that time to a place of hope and an embrace of the American dream - Which really is what makes a America great; The ability to dream and press for something greater than ourselves - The care and concern for our fellow man.
