A reread. I'd forgotten how wonderful this book -- originally conceived as a graphic novel, and still crammed with propulsive action and incredible images -- is. Stephenson's vision of a fully-franchised future outdoes David Foster Wallace's brand-fest Infinite Jest, and his marriage of Sumerian mythology and deep-structure linguistics to a presciently visionary cyber-future (he popularized the term 'avatar' for personal online representations) makes for an intellectual and literary tour de force. Shouldn't have surprised me given how much I love (and have frequently reread) his later novels, but I'm happy to have revisited this one.
