Black Holes and Relativistic Stars
Although S. Chandrasekhar convincingly demonstrated the inevitability of gravitational collapse for stellar bodies of sufficient mass more than sixty-five years ago, black holes and neutron stars played a minor role in serious analyses of physical or astrophysical phenomena until the discovery of quasars and pulsars in the 1960s. Today, however, black holes and neutron stars are generally recognized as key components of many astrophysical systems. In addition, black holes now play a central role in our understanding of fundamental gravitational phenomena at both the classical and quantum level.
Based on a symposium held in honor of S. Chandrasekhar, these papers--written by world experts in their fields--provide a comprehensive, up-to-date summary of progress made during the past decade on the theory of black holes and relativistic stars.
