It was ok. The setting embeds some interesting commentary on individual and group psychology. The author speaks down to her audience at times, explaining something that didn't need explaining. The story is also a bit slow. You can get most of the value by watching the movie.

In this suspenseful story, a girl named Beatrice Prior lives with her mother (Natalie), father (Andrew) and brother (Caleb). Her and her brother just turned 16. When kids turn 16, they have to pick between five factions on the Choosing Day; Dauntless, Erudite, Amity, Candor and Abnegation, which is the faction she is currently in. Before Choosing Day, she has to take a test to determine which faction she fits in. During the test, she goes through a series of virtual events, which finally leads to her results. According to her instructor, she is multiple factions at the same time, meaning she is divergent. Being divergent means she can think much more differently than the other Chicagoans, which is extremely dangerous. Because of these results, Beatrice lives in constant fear of her surroundings, because the day after the test is when she chooses her faction.
On the day of the test, her brother chooses Erudite, and she picks Dauntless, which surprises her parents massively. She has to do a lot of things to get into Dauntless though, like shooting targets and jumping off buildings, which is out of place for her. After a while, she falls in love with her instructor, Four, and together they find out the leader of Erudite is trying to assassinate her family’s faction and kill all divergents! Will she get away in time, or will she die before even saving her family? Find out why in Divergent!
