New England and the Bavarian Illuminati by Vernon Stauffer provides a superb overview of the historical background of the pangs of our country's birth and the infiltration of Illuminist ideals within the Masonic community. Quoting from a wide variety of statesmen, clergymen, historians and journalists of the late 18th and early 19th century, this scholarly work covers the zeitgeist of the time and the Illuminati's attempts to transform society from within via reading societies, Masonic groups, and political efforts.
