Richard Samuel Attenborough -- August 29, 1923 - August 24, 2014 Richard Samuel Attenborough, Baron Attenborough, was a British actor, film director, film producer, and entrepreneur. He was the President of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). As a film director and producer, he won two Academy Awards for Gandhi in 1983. He also won four BAFTA Awards and four Golden Globe Awards. As an actor, he is perhaps best known for his roles in Brighton Rock, The Great Escape, 10 Rillington Place, Miracle on 34th Street and Jurassic Park. Attenborough was also dedicated to many charitable causes in his later years. He was President of the Muscular Dystrophy campaign for 33 years. He was also a patron of the United world Colleges movement. He was elected to the post of Chancellor of the University of Sussex on March 20, 1998, replacing The Duke of Richmond and Gordon. He retired as Chancellor of the university following graduation in July 2008. Attenborough died on August 24, 2014, five days before his 91st birthday.[
