This is a book, written about a decade before the NCBH publishing year of 1962, by a brilliant electrical engineering teacher of erstwhile Guindy Engineering College which later developed into Anna University. It is one of a series of two, the other one (to be?) written by Er T R Ganesan's colleague. Although perhaps written from his teaching notes during 1940s & later, it is essentially modern in its outlook, and presents clearly & succintly the essentials of the half of electrical engineering syllabus entrusted to the author for writing. It is fully quantitative in its approach, with a view to enabling the reader / user an immediate entry into the how's, why's & so on electrical machines, especially DC machines. The other half of the syllabus on AC machines was (to be?) covered by the companion volume. I may mention in passing
that Comrade Er T R Ganesan (1st Sept 1916 - 23rd October 2005) was a tireless champion of working classes in and around Chennai, later an LIC officer of branch manager's rank until his demise, catering to large numbers of small policies of mostly labourers. He was affectionately known as Kottur Gandhi by people in the areas of Kotturpuram, Royapettah, Nandanam & so on, including bus conductors & drivers, who accorded him respect whenever they saw him in a bus, for example. He passed away at home in Madurai, his faculties sharp till the end, as evidenced by his helping his granddaughter in her maths homework from school a few days before he passed away peacefully due to old age & frailty. For a mention of Comrade Er T R Ganesan in context, see [http://pd.cpim.org/2001/aug19/aug192k1_book_review.htm], which is a book review (in People's Democracy, vol XXV, no.33, issue dated Aug 19, 2001) of the biography K M HARI BHAT: THANNALAMATRA SEYAL VEERAR, written by N RAMAKRISHNAN in Tamil and published by Vaanavil Publications, 52, Cooks Road, Chennai 12, Rs. 30. Mr N Ramakrishnan has also written about his friend Comrade T R Ganesan in 16 March 2007 issue of ThiekKathir, of which I have a scanned pdf file.
