This author's ability to spin a tale that captures the imagination of his reader is, in my opinion, unparalleled. I don't "do" period pieces (historical or otherwise) and definitely do not read war novels of any sort. However, after being given a copy along with a challenge "to read a few pages" I can barely put it down. It is a work worthy of the time one might invest in reading it. In a word, WOW!
